Multipitch & Rope Rescue

A full day course focused on the ropework & rescue skills for multipitch climbing!  We will start with learning & practicing multipitch ropework skills such as belaying from above, transitioning through belays, switching leaders and multiple rappels.  From there we will progress into more complex scenarios such as raises, lowers, fixed point lead belays, dealing with stuck ropes, teams of 3, and lots of efficiency tricks!

Prerequisites:  Lead climbing experience including cleaning anchors and lead belaying.  The skills covered are primarily for multipitch climbing and this course is for climbers who are getting into multipitching or hope to do so!

Meeting Place & Time: Jura Creek Trailhead (10 minute drive from Canmore, AB) at 8:00am

Rock Course Combo option:  This course is often scheduled immediately after back-to-back Sport Climbing & Trad Climbing Courses and can be combined at the discounted rate of $910 + GST for a full 5 days of rock climbing!  Discounted rate also applies to combining the 3 courses anytime during the same summer. 

Book your spot: Please contact us at info@cdnalpine.com to get signed up!  You can join as an individual or as a group of up to six people.  A non-refundable deposit of $100 + GST is required to book your spot, with the remainder due 4 weeks prior to the start of the course.  Invoices will be provided with options for etransfer, credit card and PayPal.  Reading and completing a Waiver form is required to participate in all courses or trips.  A copy of the Waiver will be provided to you before booking and can also be downloaded here: CRAG Waiver Form.  Before booking you must acknowledge that you have read & agree to the Waiver form.

Agenda

We will spend a full day at a rock crag learning & practicing the most important skills for multipitch climbing scenarios.  It’s highly flexible based on everyone’s abilities and goals but the likely skills we will cover include:

  • Belaying from above
  • Anchor building
  • Fixed Point Lead Belays (ie. lead belaying from an anchor rather than the harness)
  • Efficient anchor transitions
  • Switching leaders
  • Multiple rappels
  • Stuck ropes
  • Raising a stuck climber
  • Lowering a climber from above
  • Teams of 3
  • Managing damaged ropes
  • Improvising belay/rappels without belay device
  • and a hundred little tips & tricks learned from a lifetime of climbing! 

Gear List

All technical equipment is provided free of charge. However, if you have any of your own climbing gear, feel free to use it! If you are unable to locate any of these items or have any questions, feel free to contact us at any time for assistance.

  • Sturdy footwear (hiking shoes, runners, etc)
  • Rock shoes (ideally a nice loose comfortable pair)
  • Harness (available for loan)
  • Helmet (available for loan)
  • Belay device (available for loan) – GigaJul or other “brake assist” device is best
  • Sling/biners/cord/etc (optional, lots will be provided)
